CropSpotters is where North American and South American agriculture meet. Our mission is to keep you informed about South American farming issues by providing weekly progress reports from our Brazilian CropSpotters, feedback from farmers across the globe, and insightful information from industry professionals.
The CropSpotters are a group of Brazilian farmers who have volunteered their time to keep you informed about crop progress throughout the Brazilian crop year (the first week in November through the first week in May). Each week, the Cropspotters provide reports and commentary about crop progress on their farms and in their part of the country.
By reading the CropSpotters weekly crop progress reports, you'll learn about the challenges they face, the issues they overcome, and what they're doing to maximize profit.
James Thompson, Editor-In-Chief
James Thompson has worked with the reporting farmers (CropSpotters) since 2004, and has been on several of their operations. He interviews each farmer weekly by phone or email. James and his team then carefully translate the interviews to make them interesting and informative, and to capture the unique personality of each CropSpotter.
James got started in agricultural communications back in 1974 when he won Honorable Mention in a 4-H speech writing contest in Martin, Tennessee. Since then, he's consulted with producer associations and companies on how to get their messages out. He's now part of Thompson Caiapó, a consultancy specializing in agriculture, food and public issues that helps U.S. companies bridge the communications gap with Latin American customers and influentials.
Thompson earned a "Silver Anvil," the PR industry's "Oscar," for his work on introducing biodiesel fuel to metropolitan transit authorities across the United States. He operates a 1400-acre farm in Tocantins state, Brazil.
